Mamma! I burnt the chicken!!! Is a faith-based satirical comedy that explores what happens when divine intervention interrupts your favorite show and your life. The play centers on the mundane life of Miss Shineduh Jenkins. Shineduh works a thankless airport job, volunteers at her church and has a form of Godliness that she has curated to the T. On the surface she appears to be a devout Christian who loves the Lord and spends all her free time volunteering at church. Behind closed doors however, she is a chain smoking, cursing, tv addict who just wants to watch her show and eat her unhealthy frozen dinners in peace. Set in the 90’s in a small apartment living room, Shineduh’s answering machine and landline phone act as supporting characters that transport the audience back to a time when life was simpler and more lived. She also has the added hassle of calls from her meddling mother, Vivian, and church parishioners like Sister Angie when all she really wants to do is smoke her Virginia Slim cigarettes and live her secret life unbothered. That is until Jesus calls on the mainline. Mamma! I burnt the chicken!!! Is a throwback satirical commentary, much like, your arms are too short to box with God, that is a peak inside the day-to-day life of a struggling believer. It aims to put a spotlight on the things that we give our time to versus the things we profess to love. The lives we actually live and the lives we present to the world. It’s an out of the box foray into faith-based content for the stage in 30 minutes or less with a twist. It’s 90’s nostalgia with a gospel remix and we’re ecstatic to be bringing this work to the Stephanie Feury stage.
